KT Maritime recently launched a vessel naming competition for the three Shell Prelude Infield Support Vessels (ISVs) with Broome Senior High School and Saint Mary’s College in Broome on the 19th of March, 2015. The competition allowed interested students to suggest three vessel names relevant to astronomy, marine life and or nautical themes, with the major prize being a Macbook Pro. The competition was a great success with 33 forms collected, and 89 suggested vessel names to choose from. Tasked with the challenge of agreeing on the preferred entries KT Maritime took to the web to publish an online voting system, collecting 17 votes from selected judges in Broome, Perth, Sydney, Rotterdam and Singapore.
KT Maritime’s board voted in favour of selecting a common theme, and based on the results of the competition voting, concluded that the names of the vessels would be after locations in the Broome region. Therefore the selected names (in order of hull number) are “RT Beagle Bay”, “RT Roebuck Bay” and “RT Kuri Bay”. The board noted that the ISVs will in fact pass each bay when arriving and departing the Port of Broome, and given KT Maritime long term presence in the region, it was concluded that it would be a great gesture to pay homage to the beautiful Broome coastline. For those curious about the “RT” prefix, it simply stands for RotorTug, a reference to the design of the ISVs.
KT Maritime would like to thank Andrew Chapman (VET Coordinator, Broome Senior High School) and Aidan Mitchell (VET Coordinator at Saint Mary’s) for announcing the competition and collecting the entries on our behalf. As well as Rob Wilkinson (Shell) for helping us organise the competition; and Stephen Melville (Shell) for suggesting the naming competition to our team.On the 7th of May, 2015 at a Shell organise career event at Broome Civic Centre, known as “speed careering”, KT Maritime announced the results of the competition and revealed that Helena Hungerford-Morgan (Saint Mary’s College) had in fact selected all three winning entries. Since it was KT Maritime’s expectation to be awarding three prizes to three separate winners, the prize pool was extended to the fourth and fifth placed entrants, Edden Bibby (Broome Senior High School) and Sabita Latchman (Saint Mary’s College). With Helena receiving a MacBook Pro and an iPad, and Edden and Sabita both presented an iPad for their outstanding entries.
